Thespian, the Act of Alchemy is a Pre-Hardmode boss, intended to be battled after Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu. It is consisted of a reincarnated alchemist named Thespian and a floating mask simply known as the Ringmaster.

Spawning

Thespian does not spawn naturally, and instead requires the The Malsaine Draught, which can be acquired by interacting with the Astrologian NPC and choosing the "Strange Potion" option.

Behavior

Thespian stays in the center of the arena and casts attacks. The mask will occassionally shift between different expressions by using Paradigm of Chaos, noted by the status message: The Ringmaster's delight/despair/fury begets chaos... The expression changes the effect of the Alchemical Anarchy attack.

  • Argyropeia: Fires a horizontal/vertical array of projectiles that moves very slowly. Thespian repeats this attack twice, shifting between the horizontal and vertical shots and effectively creating a grid.
  • Aetheric Alkaheist: Summons an array of 3 potions on the left and right edges of the arena. The potions burst two-by-two, releasing a damaging radius around the original spot.
  • Phlogiston Pyrotechnics: Summons stars near the top and bottom of the arena. After a certain time, the stars explode.
  • Athanoric Arena: The arena borders become corrosive and damaging for a certain amount of time. Touching the arena borders deals 33% of the player's maximum health as damage.
  • Ringmaster's Will: A countdown will appear over the player, telling them to either move right, move left, or stay still. If the player does this, a green "Success!" will appear over the player; otherwise, the player will take 33% of their maximum health in damage.
  • Let's Celebrate!: Drops five happy bombs from the top of the screen that explode after a certain delay. They also deal contact damage.
  • Lixiviate: Fires an array of projectiles from above, at a slightly curved angle.
  • Alchemical Anarchy: Performs a different attack based on the current expression.
    • Delight: For a short period, stars are constantly summoned at the player's location. These stars explode after a short delay.
    • Despair: Three blue bolts rain down on the player. This attack repeats four times. This attack deals 10% of the players maximum health as damage.
    • Fury: The player is launched to the left or right after a countdown.

Tips

  • It is very important to pay attention to Thespian's attacks, as the countdowns often move by very quickly.
  • Be prepared to move (or don't move) when Thespian casts Ringmaster's Will. Make sure to take other active attacks into account.

Trivia

  • Thespian is an adjective meaning that something is related to theatre or acting.
